Life and career

Tansel was born in the city of Kilis, although he later moved to Ankara, the city where he grew up. Öngel comes from an immigrant family, his grandmother on his father’s side is from Thessaloniki, while his maternal grandmother is from Egypt and his grandfather is Lebanese.

Tansel studied and graduated from the Ankara State Conservatory of Hacettepe University, graduating in 2000 with a degree in theater studies. Without waiting any longer, that same year he started working for the State Theaters of Turkey, later joining the Istanbul State Theater.

Professional career of Tansel Öngel

His television debut would come in 2004 when he participated in the series “Uy Başuma Gelenler”. However, that same year he also made his first appearance on the big screen, playing the role of Kadir in the film Kismet.

His next series would be just one year later, in 2005, when he played the character of Demir in the soap opera “Avrupa Yakasi”.

From then on, Tensel Öngel would continue an exciting career, where he would participate in a great number of series and movies. Some of the series in which he was part of the cast in the following years, were Kaybolan Yıllar, Güz Yangını, Adak, Elveda Derken, Bu Kalp Seni Unutur Mu? and Geniş Aile (in this novel he made a special appearance).

However, despite having participated in all of these series, Öngel’s career had not reached its peak, since, it was in 2011 when he starred in the famous series Muhteşem Yüzyil, known as “The Sultan” or “The Great Sultan”, series in which he gave life to the character Alvise Gritti.

After being catapulted to fame, the actor continued to participate in many more series such as The Innocents (Masumlar Apartmani), Benim İçin Üzülme, Yaz’ın Öyküsü, Kalbimin Sultanı, Ya İstiklal Ya Ölüm, Kırmızı Oda and Mavera, the latter, released in 2021.

Career in the theater

Tansel Öngel, unlike most actors, has developed in all facets of acting, since, he has not only participated in films and series but also in theater, an art in which he has made appearances in renowned plays, such as adaptations of The Great Gatsby, Incendies, A Streetcar Named Desire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, All My Sons, among other plays.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that Tansel Öngel is also presenting a television program called “Maske Kimsin Sen?” (The Masked Singer Turkey) since 2022.
