As we mentioned, the protagonist of this Turkish TV series is none other than Saladin, one of the leading figures in Muslim history and one of the pillars of the Crusade of the Kings, where he fought against the Crusader states in the Levant region.
In this crusade, Saladin fought a pitched battle against the Christian crusaders that led to the conquest of Jerusalem in 1187. This ended nine decades of Frankish occupation.
Saladin was a staunch defender of Islam and, more specifically, of Sunni religious orthodoxy. The many battles he led allowed him to unite the Middle East both politically and religiously.
However, the plot of the novel takes place long before all these military and political successes. The series tells how Saladin, after being thrown into a well by Count Miles, is helped to escape by Balian, the brother of Count Hugh, who is on his deathbed.
Balian had plans to move to France to get away from all the political chaos in Jerusalem, but what he did not know was that by helping Saladin, his destiny would change forever and he would find himself irrevocably linked to that of the future Sultan.
